Volkswagen Unveils ID. Polo: A New Era for the People’s Electric Car

Breaking News — Volkswagen this week presented the production version of the ID. Polo, a compact electric vehicle the company says will reclaim the spirit of the original “people’s car” for a new generation. The model is expected to launch in Europe by early 2025 with a starting price under €25,000.

“The ID. Polo is our answer to making electric mobility truly accessible,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, in a statement. “We are bringing back the promise of the Beetle and the Golf — a car that belongs to everyone.”

With an estimated range of 250 miles on the WLTP cycle, the ID. Polo targets urban and suburban drivers seeking an affordable EV without compromising on everyday usability. The unveiling took place at VW’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany.

Industry experts call the move critical for Volkswagen’s electrification push. “This is the vehicle that could define VW’s future market share in Europe,” said Dr. Elena Richter, senior automotive analyst at Berlin-based Mobility Futures. “If they get the price and reliability right, the ID. Polo has the potential to dominate the compact EV segment.”

Background

Volkswagen’s “people’s car” legacy began with the Beetle in the 1930s and continued with the Golf, which became Europe’s best-selling car for decades. The ID. family — launched in 2020 with the ID.3 — represents the company’s shift to a fully electric lineup.

The ID. Polo name revives the Polo badge, a subcompact model traditionally powered by internal combustion engines. Volkswagen has sold over 20 million Polos since 1975. By electrifying this iconic nameplate, VW aims to convert loyal customers to EVs without losing brand identity.

The new model is the fourth member of the ID. range, joining the ID.3, ID.4, and ID. Buzz. It is built on the Modular Electric Drive (MEB) platform, which underpins all current VW electric vehicles and allows for cost-efficient mass production.

What This Means

The ID. Polo directly competes with upcoming affordable EVs like the Tesla Model 2 and Chinese rivals such as BYD’s Dolphin. Its success hinges on delivering a low entry price without sacrificing the driving experience that Golf and Polo owners expect.

“The EV market is polarizing between premium and budget options,” said Mark Chen, director of EV research at Global Auto Insights. “The ID. Polo fills a crucial gap — a reliable, familiar brand offering at a price point that many households can consider.”

For Volkswagen, the ID. Polo is not just a new model; it is a strategic test of whether the company can scale EV production to meet mass demand. If the launch succeeds, it could accelerate the retirement of internal combustion engines in the compact segment across Europe and beyond.

Volkswagen plans to begin accepting pre-orders later this year in select markets before a full rollout in the first quarter of 2025. The company has not yet confirmed availability outside Europe, but analysts expect the model to eventually reach North America and Asia.
